Left-Brained/Right-Brained.
In the diverse interests that Dale pursues, he sees a common thread: the balance of analytical ability and creativity required to solve problems. He brings that holistic approach to his work as an IP Lawyer. As a child, Dale asked, “How do things get built?” His curiosity about structures is what initially led him to major in civil engineering at the University of Illinois. But adept as he was at studying rigorous mathematical equations in a technical context, he found that it was not comprehensive enough for his intellectually restless mind. Studying economics and finance allowed Dale to expand his horizons and grasp an understanding of larger global systems. Dale’s first career was as a computer systems analyst at a major international consulting firm. His approach was to analyze the business problems from the clients’ standpoint, then create, design and synthesize the system elements needed to resolve those real world problems. Solving business problems in the context of technology with analytics and creativity. Good training for a future IP lawyer.
What does your insurance policy say?
As a lawyer, Dale also has several years of experience analyzing the implications of policy language for various types of liability insurance coverage, including intellectual property claims. With his in-depth understanding of coverage language, and a meticulous eye for analyzing policy exceptions and exclusions, Dale can provide our clients with an extra dimension of IP analysis. Analysis of the complex issues involving the nature of IP claims and the types of damages involved are his specialty. Dale has issued several dozen insurance coverage opinions over the course of his career, and has been involved in several more coverage litigation cases.
Writers Write.
Writing, reviewing, editing and re-writing are what makes for an excellent writer. At least, that is what Dale believes – that writing is a creative art form that takes practice to perfect. Over the years, he has published several articles on copyright, as well as domain names, Internet liability, trademark law, and insurance coverage. Dale brings the same precision to his articles that he has always brought to his legal and computer systems work, but with particular emphasis on the practical implications.
